New eftec research: Economic risk of contaminated biosolid applications

New research by environmental economics experts eftec represents a novel investigation of socio-economic risks from contaminants in sewage sludge.

‘Economic risk of contaminated biosolid applications’ by eftec at Fidra’s request compares the economic implications of the UK’s current use of treated sewage sludge (biosolids) on farmland against four alternative sludge treatment solutions. The research recommends that UK sludge policy take a precautionary approach that protects soils as a long-term national asset, weighing the full costs of land application and prioritising alternative treatments that destroy contaminants and recover resources.
